GuangXi Liubao Tea
Guangxi Liubao Tea is a famous Chinese dark tea with a long history. Originating in Liubao Town, Wuzhou, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, it has a history of over 1,500 years. It was a national famous tea and tribute tea in the Qing Dynasty, and later sold to Southeast Asia as a well-known “overseas Chinese export tea” in the late Qing Dynasty.
Liubao Town, the tea’s origin, lies north of the Tropic of Cancer with a subtropical monsoon climate—sufficient sunlight, warm weather and abundant rainfall. Surrounded by rolling mountains and lush forests, tea trees grow deep in the woods with little direct sunlight, laying a solid foundation for the tea’s unique quality.
As a typical dark tea, Liubao Tea is known for four traits: “red, thick, aged, mellow”. Dry leaves are tight, dark brown and glossy with rich aged fragrance. Brewed with boiling water, the soup is bright red, mellow and smooth, often with pine smoke aroma and betel nut charm; the leaf base is copper-brown and uniform. It also “improves with age”—during storage, it may grow “golden flowers” (Eurotium cristatum), which promotes the transformation of beneficial substances in the tea to form a unique flavor.
