Why is tea called tea in English?

Have you ever wondered that?

It’s globally recognised that tea originated from China with written records dating back over

2ooo years ago.

But whereabouts in China?

It’s right here in Wuyi Mountain , Fujian, China.

Wuyi Mountain is renowned for producing high-quality tea.
Its tea varieties are mainly divided into two major categories:
Wuyi Rock Tea (a type of oolong tea) and Wuyi Black Tea,
boasting a wide range of varieties and unique production techniques.
It is known as the “Kingdom of Tea Tree Varieties” and the “Cradle of World Black Tea”.
Wuyi Rock Tea falls into five main categories: Da Hong Pao, Rou Gui, Shui Xian,
Qi Zhong, and Ming Cong. Among these, Da Hong Pao is the most popular and widely favored.

And in the local dialect, in Hokkien , tea is pronounced as “te” or “tay”.
So when the Dutch and Portuguese traders came to China. When they brought tea back to Europe,
the Dutch traders adopted the local sound “tay” into T-H-E-E” in Dutch.

And then it went to England , it became T-E-A in English.
And that’s where tea is from.
Pretty cool,right?
